The holidays are a time of joy for many, yet a time of emotional upheaval for many others. Individuals who have been marginalized by their families, church or communities are likely to feel isolated, depressed and lonely as they witness the winter holiday joy of others. But you can share your love with the homeless members of the LGBTQ+ community this holiday season, and with less sacrifice than you may imagine.
Give the Gift of Presence
One of the worst feelings is the feeling of invisibility, and that’s often what homeless LGBTQ+ individuals feel. No one wants to look their way, to see their pain during what is supposed to be “the most wonderful time of the year.” You can make them visible by honoring them with your presence—a smile, a heartfelt “Happy Holidays,” a few minutes to listen (really listen) to their story.
Contribute to Those in Need
You can help provide small comforts to homeless LGBTQ+ individuals by contributing to shelters, foodbanks or other organizations by contributing:
These contributions (if made to 501(c)(3) organizations) can also benefit you at tax time.
UNM Truman Health Services will gladly accept donations of clothing, toiletries and financial gifts to help provide holiday comfort to our patients in need.
Many mega corporations, like Apple and Target, are public supporters of LGBTQ+ rights, and a portion of their profits go to rights advocacy groups, which often provide resources to LGBTQ+ individuals in need. By patronizing these corporations, you can contribute to the resources used to create a world where we are all treated as equals.
